The 2015 Frozen Four is down to two after the national semifinals were completed Thursday. Providence College advanced to the national championship game with a convincing 4-1 win over the University of Nebraska Omaha, while Boston University outlasted the University of North Dakota 5-3 to earn their spot in the title game.Providence returns to the national title game for the first time in 30 years where they finished as runner up to 1985 national champion Ren selaer led by some kid named Adam Oates. The Friars seek the schools first national title Saturday.Boston University, however, has been here before. The Terriers have five national championships in their history and will be looking for their first since 2009.The national championship game will be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN. The Providence Friars came ready to play at that was evident from the moment the puck dropped. They dominated the first two periods, outshooting the Mavericks 33 to 16. If not for Omaha goaltender Ryan Ma sa, the game could have been over a lot earlier than it was. Ma sa was doing amazing things all game to Kenyan Drake Jersey give his team a chance, but this was probably his prettiest save: Noel Acciari opened the scoring for the Friars 11:02 into the second period after the team had spent the first 30 minutes peppering Ma sa with chance after chance. Up next, it was first-rounder Mark Jankowski showing some soft hands in front of the net as he took a centering feed and put the moves on Ma sa before roofing a shot into the upper corner. The third period looked like it would be much of the same until Omaha struck thanks to a perfect centering feed by Tyler Vesel to prospect Jake Guentzel, who made no mistake with the shot. That made it 2- Theo Riddick Jersey 1 and gave the Mavericks some much needed jump. Unfortunately for Omaha, it was short lived. Really short lived. Providences Trevor Mingoia reestablished the two-goal lead for the Friars with a tally just 24 seconds later. That was a back-breaker for Omaha. The Friars added an empty netter in the waning seconds to start the party in Rhode Island.Jon Gillies, the teams highly-regarded goaltender and a big-time prospect for Calgary, barely broke a sweat while making 25 saves in the contest. In one of the most highly-anticipated games in Frozen Four history, the Boston University Terriers welcomed North Dakota to what was e sentially their home building. UND brought reinforcements, however. A large contingent of fans clad in black and green were on hand to cheer on their beloved hockey team.On top of two great programs, the game also included one of the most impre sive players in college hockey in decades. BU freshman Jack Eichel has been the biggest stories in all of hockey all season with 67 points coming into the Frozen Four. He showed the hockey world what all the fu s was about pretty early in this one.Eichel scored the games opening goal after putting a backhand shot into a yawning net for a power-play goal 4:59 into the game. It was probably one of the easiest goals he's had to score this year. GIF: You can't give Jack Eichel an entire open net CJ Fogler (@cjzero) The Terriers had the better of the play in the opening frame, but nothing was coming easy against North Dakota.Another penalty for UND ended up giving BU a late power play in the first and defenseman Brandon Hickey capitalized with a heavy slap shot through prospect Zane McIntyre. That goal came with just 48 seconds to play in the first to give the Terriers a 2-0 cushion.North Dakota wasted little time in answering back in the middle period, however. prospect Luke Johnson wired a perfect wrist shot into a small opening over BU goalie Matt OConnors shoulder a mere 44 seconds into the second. It was just a beautiful shot. (via ) That made it 2-1 and gave North Dakota a load of confidence as they started controlling play.Around the halfway mark of the period, the wheels fell off for North Dakota a little bit. Boston University freshman A.J. Greer drilled one of the most perfectly-placed one-timers youll see off of an Eichel pa s to make it 3-1. Not even two minutes later, prospect Doyle Somerby scored his first goal of the season on a shot that squeaked through McIntyre.Though the Terriers appeared to be in control, North Dakota simply would not quit in the third period. Defenseman Troy Stecher had a shorthanded, una Hunter Renfrow Jersey sisted goal gift-wrapped for him by BU goalie Matt O'Connor with 7:50 remaining in regulation to cut the deficit in half.GIF: BU G Matt O'Conner loses the puck and UND's Troy Stecher gets a freebie goal CJ Fogler (@cjzero) Soon after Stecher's tally, Connor Gaarder completed a pretty pa sing play by UND to pull within one. The last four minutes of regulation were as frenetic and tense as youd expect a one-goal game with a trip to the national title game on the line. It wasnt until Eichel sent a puck from his own end all the way into the empty net to make it 5-3 that allowed BU to breathe a little easier with their ticket all but punched to the final. It was the kind of game everyone thought it would be and in the end it was the nations best player leading the charge to help his team play for the national championship e sentially on home ice.Eichel's three points in the semifinal give him 70 in 39 games this season. He is expected to be awarded the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as college hockey's best player Friday night.Boston University improved to 5-0 on TD Garden ice this year with the win over North Dakota, having also earned the Beanpot and Hockey East tournaments on that same ice surface this season. Now theyre playing for the most important of all the trophies Saturday. Both BU and Providence hail from Hockey East. Saturdays title game will be the first time two teams from that conference played in the final since 1999 when Maine downed New Hampshire in Anaheim.Despite being in-conference opponents, the two clubs only played twice this year. They Jim Otto Jersey split the home-and-home series played way back on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. BU holds the edge 5-3 on aggregate. The stage is set for a wildly entertaining national championship game after a pair of great semifinal matchups. It should be a great showcase for college hockey as it wraps up a most memorable season.
